biography

Yang Liu, PhD is the Charles B. de Nancrede Professor and Director of the Division of Immunotherpy, in the Section of General Surgery at the University of Michigan Health System. Dr. Liu is the co-leader of Immunology Program in the Comprehensive Cancer Center and a member in the Program of Molecular Mechanism of Diseases. Dr. Liu received his bachelor of science degree in biology at Wuhan University in China in 1982. He went on to receive his M.S. in Virology and Immunology at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing, China, in 1985. Dr. Liu then studied at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia, where he received a PhD in Immunology in 1988. From 1989 to 1991, he was a Postdoctoral Associate and then Associate Research Scientist in the Immunobiology Section at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, CT.

In January of 1992, Dr. Liu joined the faculty in the Department of Pathology, Division of Immunology, at New York University Medical Center, New York, NY, as an Assistant Professor and in July 1996, he became an Associate Professor with tenure at the same University. Dr. Liu became the Kurtz Chair Professor of Pathology at Ohio State University in September 1998. In July of 2006, Dr. Liu became the Charles B. de Nancrede Professor and the Director of the Division of Immunotherapy at the University of Michigan Health System.

Dr. Liu's research interests include fundamental studies linking cancer biology to host's immune response and genetic control of cancer and autoimmune disease, as well as translational research aiming at immunotherapy of cancer and autoimmune diseases.
