July 13, 2009 -- Jennifer Waljee, MD Awarded with the 2009 Association of Women Surgeons Outstanding Resident Award

Jennifer Waljee, MD of the University of Michigan Department of Surgery is being recognized as a recipient of the 2009 Outstanding Resident Award, presented by the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) on October 12, 2009.

This award was established in 1999 and is presented annually to a woman surgery resident who has demonstrated excellence and leadership in the field. Dr. Waljee is receiving the award in recognition of the outstanding leadership she has demonstrated in both her professional and personal life. She is the second Department of Surgery resident to receive this honor following Dr. Erika Newman's receipt of the award in 2007.

The Association of Women Surgeons is committed to supporting the professional and personal needs of female surgeons at various stages in their career - from residency through retirement. With over 1,700 women surgeons as members, AWS is one of the largest organizations dedicated to enhancing the interaction and exchange of information between women surgeons.

August 19, 2007 -- Erika Newman, M.D. to receive the 2007 Outstanding Woman Resident Award

Erika Newman, M.D. has been selected to receive the 2007 Outstanding Woman Resident Award by the Association of Women Surgeons. Erika was chosen for this recognition from among a national pool of candidates. This award recognizes a remarkable career in training and Dr. Newman's outstanding potential to contribute to the surgical profession. The award ceremony will be held on Monday, October 8 in New Orleans during the meeting of the American College of Surgeons.

American Society of Plastic Surgeons Conference

Drs. Pacella, Cavaliere, Egeland, Curtin and Wilensky attended the annual American Society of Plastic Surgeons conference in Chicago this October.

Not only did these plastic residents present cases and posters to attendees but celebrated at the annual Dingman Alumni Dinner at Gibson's Steakhouse. Funds for their travel were provided in part by the generous donation of Inamed Aesthetics. The Dingman Society is an alumni society for all University of Michigan graduates of the plastic residency.

Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society Meeting

Michael Mulholland, M.D., PhD, Chair, Department of Surgery and the Department of Surgery sponsored several General and Plastic Surgery House Officers including Justin Dimick, David Heidt, Erika Newman, Amit Mather, Rupa Seetharamaiah, Daniel Schwarz, Timothy Janiga and Albert Ma to attend and present during the Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society meeting held in Ann Arbor, MI October 19-22, 2006. Funding for residents to attend the Coller meeting and participate in the Coller Tours was generously provided by the alumni of the Department of Surgery.

The Coller Surgical Society was established in 1947 by Dr. Coller's former University of Michigan residents. The annual fall clinical meeting embodies the Society's founding principles to promote the art and science of Surgery, foster education and perpetuate friendships. The program began with a welcome reception on Thursday night followed by clinical and social programs on both Friday and Saturday, with a farewell brunch on Sunday. The attendees had an opportunity to meet and interact with surgical alumni from all over the United States, many of whom are or have been in significant leadership roles in their areas of surgical specialty.

The University of Michigan residents, research assistants and medical student were involved in several presentations during the clinical program as well as the poster sessions. Brenda Cho received the Jobst Award, which are awarded to resident presenters during the annual clinical meeting and Brian Knipp received the Milton Bryant - Margaret Arnold Coller Meeting Award which is chosen by the Section of Vascular Surgery each year.

The Coller Clinical Tour for residents was established with eight selected each year. The tours allow House Officer trainees of Coller Society members to visit other major medical institutions to gain insight into the clinical and research endeavors of the institution, tour the facilities, and meet surgical faculty and trainees. In 2006, Jonathan Hundley, D. Trey Blazer, and Jules Lin each participated in the Coller Tour program as part of their chief year rotations.

American College of Surgeons Meeting

The American College of Surgeon's Division of Education invites students from all four years of medical school to attend the Clinical Congress to participate in a program designed specifically for medical students interested in pursuing surgery as a career. The program began on Sunday, October 8, with a welcome luncheon, orientation, and keynote address. Sessions with leading surgeon faculty members and residents will include topics such as deciding if surgery is the best career choice, taking the appropriate steps in each year of medical school to be competitive for surgical residency programs, identifying the qualities that program directors want in applicants, asking for letters for recommendation, interviewing successfully, choosing residency programs, preparing to optimize the resident experience, and beginning to consider various surgical specialties and settings in which to practice. Be sure to take advantage of this unique opportunity to interact with other students interested in surgery, residents, program directors, faculty, and surgeons practicing in academe and the community. training and scientific advances that will change the practice of surgery in coming years. Receptions each day provided plenty of time for interaction with faculty, other surgeons, residents, and students.

Once again, it was a huge success!!!
