November 30, 2006 — Inauguration of the Arnold G. Coran Collegiate Professorship in Pediatric Surgery

On November 30, 2006, Ronald B. Hirschl was installed as the first Arnold G. Coran Professor of Pediatric Surgery in the University of Michigan Medical School. more

November 20, 2006 — Transplantation Surgery Receives Major Grant

The American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) and the University of Michigan (UM) are pleased to announce the receipt of a major grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The 4-year grant will provide reimbursement of travel expenses and subsistence costs for living organ donors, removing an important financial disincentive to living organ donation.

October 18, 2006 — Inauguration of Turcotte Professorship on Transplantation Surgery

On October 18, 2006 Jeffrey D. Punch was installed as the first Jeremiah and Claire Turcotte Professor of Transplantation Surgery in the University of Michigan Medical School. The Turcotte Professorship was created in 2000 due to the generous contributions of Jeremiah and Claire Turcotte and many, many of Dr. Turcotte's colleagues, friends, associates and trainees. more

September 15, 2006 — William W. Coon, MD Respite Room Dedicated

Jane Wilson Coon, PhD, Assistant Professor Emeritus of Nursing and widow of William W. Coon, MD, along with many friends of Dr. Coon, has graciously donated funds in Dr. Coon's memory to establish the William W. Coon, MD Respite Room on Unit 8A in the University Hospital. more

July 13, 2006 — Congratulations to Dr. Arnold Coran

Congratulations to Dr. Arnold Coran on his election to honorary membership in the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Membership in this prestigious organization is selective and limited. Dr. Coran had the honor of addressing the diplomates of the College on July 11, 2006 in London.

July 13, 2006 — Society of Clinical Surgery to Meet in Ann Arbor

The Department of Surgery and the Section of General Surgery are honored to be hosting the Annual Meeting of the Society of Clinical Surgery November 16-18, 2006. Participants will be observing in the operating rooms as well as attending scientific and clinical presentations. Arrangements for the meeting are being expertly handled by Ms. Mary Kiel in General Surgery.

July 3, 2006 — Coller Society to Meet in Ann Arbor

The Department of Surgery is honored to host the Annual Meeting of the Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society October 18-23, 2006. The Society was founded in 1947 by former UM residents as an expression of the esteem, respect, and affections for Dr. Coller, Chairman of the Department of Surgery from 1930-1957. Current membership numbers approximately 400, representing many geographic areas of the U.S. and several foreign countries. Excellent and even fun opportunities to assist with hosting during the meeting are available. Contact Maria Grupe in the Development Office, 647-9984.

June 26, 2006 — Coller Society on the Web

The Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society Web site has been launched and can be accessed at www.collersociety.org or through the Department of Surgery web site at www.um-surgery.org. The web site was developed with the expertise of the Department's own Michigan Multimedia group assisted by Ms. Joanne Hoeft of Surgery Administration. The web site provides general information about the Society with specific information about upcoming meetings. The site will soon feature a membership directory and membership renewal capability.
