Born in Holland, Michigan, George Dale Zuidema graduated from Hope College in 1949 and received his MD in 1953 from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Following his surgical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1959 he was named to the faculty at the University of Michigan in 1960. While at Michigan he was named John and Mary R. Markle Scholar and received the Henry Russel Award in 1963. In 1964 he returned to Johns Hopkins University to become Professor and Director of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-In-Chief of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. While at Hopkins he chaired the national Study on Surgical Services for the United States (SOSSUS) and served on the scientific and technical advisory committee on the Apollo Program for NASA. He returned to the University of Michigan in 1984 as the first Vice Provost for Medical Affairs and served in this capacity until his retirement in 1995. During his tenure at Michigan the new University Hospital was opened and grew to include two new medical research buildings, the Cancer and Geriatric Centers and expansion of clinical services in a number of extramural locations.
