Transplant Surgery Rotation
The transplant surgery rotation include experience in the care of patients who require solid organ transplantation, as well as general surgery problems in patients with liver failure, or who have had previous solid organ transplantation. This service also cares for patients with liver diseases managed by elective resection. Experience in transplantation surgery occurs at the first, fourth and chief levels.
- Experience in the first year involves basic critical care issues in patients suffering from renal, pancreatic, or hepatic failure, and all general surgery patients.
- Fourth-year residents concentrate on multi-organ harvesting, surgery for dialysis access and in-hospital consultations on potential transplant candidates. In this manner an appreciation of the indications and contraindications for transplantation is achieved.
- The Chief resident runs the transplant service, and operates on transplant patients as well as the multitude of general surgery problems referred to this service.
- For six months per year the Chief resident and Transplant Fellow overlap clinical responsibilities. During this period of time the Fellow provides assistance to the Chief resident, who makes all decisions with the attending surgeon.
