The University of Michigan Hospitals

The University of Michigan opened the first university-owned hospital in the nation in 1869. Today, the UMMC consists of the University Hospital (adult hospital), C. S. Mott Children's Hospital, and Women's Hospital (which includes Holden Neonatal Hospital), all located in a single complex. There are 865 licensed beds spread over 4,671,878 square feet of facilities.

Also located in the complex is the Towsley Center for Medical Education (including the new Clinical Simulation Center), the Cancer Center and the Med Inn, a hotel for patients and families. The medical school facilities (including the Animal Surgery Operating Room) and Taubman Medical Library are a five-minute walk (indoors or outdoors) from the medical center.

There are 42 operating rooms in the main complex (Main, Mott and Cancer Center). Operations are also performed at the Kellogg Eye Center (an outpatient center 0.5 mile from the hospitals) and Livonia Surgery Center, providing an additional eight outpatient operating rooms. A Cardiovascular Center near completion is attached to the hospital and adds an additional 8 operating rooms. The East Ann Arbor ambulatory surgery center is located approximately 4 miles from the hospital and adds an additional 6 operating rooms. In 2004, there were over 42,000 inpatient admissions, 57,000 operations and 1.5 million outpatient visits at the University of Michigan Medical Center.
